Expert Warns Against Forcing Employees Back to the Office: ‘Dinosaurs of Our Age’

Employers pushing for a full-time return to the office get labeled as “dinosaurs of our age” by a leading expert. Sir Cary Cooper, a Professor of Organisational Psychology and Health at the University of Manchester, warns that such mandates could damage employee wellbeing and productivity. He believes it might drive away talented staff, too.

Amazon plans for all corporate staff to return to the office five days a week starting January. It follows other major companies like Boots and Goldman Sachs in reinstating pre-pandemic work practices. Despite this trend, evidence suggesting that flexible working boosts job satisfaction and retention remains strong.

The Labour Party looks to introduce legislation making flexible work the default from the first day of employment and banning zero-hours contracts. This proposal contrasts with some businesses that argue these changes might harm job creation and economic growth.

The ongoing debate shows a clash between traditional management styles and changing workforce expectations, especially as many employees still seek a better work-life balance post-pandemic.
